Picture of the month: Fivehold twinned microstructure determines the properties of nanowires in transparent electrodes

Fivefold twinned silver nanowires play an important role in EAM Research Area B where they are used in flexible and stretchable electronics, e.g., as transparent electrodes in printed solar cells. Atomistic simulations performed in Research Area A3 showed that their unique structure leads to a complex strain state within the wires, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction measurements in research area A2. The internal strain state was furthermore shown to affect the elastic properties as well as the deformation and failure of these nanowires in unexpected ways.
